Island 'I do' for Kristy
Andrew Hornery
February 7, 2009

Page 1 of 2 Single page view

Her matrimonial home may have 19 bathrooms at her disposal, but the expat model Kristy Hinze is opting for the more laid back attractions of the British Virgin Islands for her wedding to the US billionaire Jim Clark next month.

And at $US51,000 ($78,000) a night, it's practically a steal.

PS hears Hinze, 28, and Clark, 64, will host an extravagant series of celebrations on a private island in the Caribbean, most likely Necker Island or the alarmingly named Mosquito Island, which are a hop, skip and jump from Clark's humungous Palm Beach mansion.

Guests from Sydney will fly to Miami, then make their way to St Thomas and Virgin Gorda before boarding Clark's cruise liner, the $US100 million superyacht Athena. The islands, within view of each other, are considered the world's most exclusive private resorts and are owned by Sir Richard Branson.

Hinze and her entourage of Sydney party types, along with Clark and his wealthy but much older friends, will be able to soak up the stunning and unspoilt slice of the Caribbean, free of those dreaded long-lensed paparazzi. Instead it will be flamingos and ancient tortoises (not the two-legged billionaire variety but those with shells) to keep the wedding party company as they splash in the turquoise waters with coral reefs and beautiful white beaches.

The islands, which boast 50 staff, set the maximum number of guests at 28, but the Athena is expected to take on any overflow.

Hinze's fairytale marriage will continue when she returns to Florida and Clark's mega-mansion, an almost 6300-square-metre pile which has 19 bathrooms, a lift, four patios, two pools and a tunnel leading to a mystery destination.

Known as Il Palmetto, the 1930 Italian-style home is surrounded by two hectares of gardens and man-made lakes along South Ocean Boulevard, dubbed "Billionaires' Row".

Victor International unveils Oil Nut Bay Resort Community and North Sound Yacht Club on Virgin Gorda groundbreaking ceremony
February 2nd, 2009 7:43 AM
Victor International unveils Oil Nut Bay Resort Community and North Sound Yacht Club on Virgin Gorda groundbreaking ceremony
Victor Foundation Donates $10,000 to Robinson O'Neal Memorial Primary School

By Victor International

Today, His Honourable Premier Ralph O'Neal, His Excellency Governor David Pearey, David V. Johnson and other Victor International executives held an official groundbreaking ceremony for the Oil Nut Bay resort community, Oil Nut Bay Beach Club and North Sound Yacht Club.

The event, hosting nearly 50 people, took place on the new Oil Nut Bay beach and invited guests to tour the property and the Beach Villa, now under construction. Gerald Farara, of Ferara Kerins, served as Master of Ceremonies, with a prayer given by Pastor Sylvia Rhymer of Church of God Holiness, North Sound. The groundbreaking ceremony was complete with the firing of a cannon, a yacht club tradition. The event was followed by a luncheon at Victor's Biras Creek Resort.

Oil Nut Bay, a pristine resort community offering freehold home ownership, sits on 300 acres of free and clear land on the eastern peninsula of Virgin Gorda. No road access creates a remote private island feel and paramount privacy, ideal for families and high-profile owners.

Developed with a focus on nature and wellness, learning and family, Oil Nut Bay provides owners an unparalleled combination of distinctive architecture, outstanding Caribbean lifestyle and personal attention.

The Oil Nut Bay Beach Club will act as the family social center of Oil Nut Bay; it will be the heartbeat of the resort community. This main building, a dramatic open air palapa, will accommodate weddings, cocktail parties and special events. In addition, the building will feature four private dining/meeting rooms for intimate occasions. On a daily basis, it will act as a casual lounge for residents and their guests to read or relax. The Beach Club will also feature an outside bar and grill that will provide spectacular luncheon options to the beach and pools.

The resort community will be filled with other unique amenities including a state-of-the-art Nature Center. With Marine and Environmental Biologists on staff, local school classes will be invited to Oil Nut Bay to learn the history of the land, North Sound and the BVI people, as well as experience the amazing flora and fauna of the BVI.

The North Sound Yacht Club sits adjacent to Oil Nut Bay and Biras Creek Resort. The Club will feature a state-of-the-art marina with 23 slips for mega-yachts ranging in size from 100 to 350 feet, as well as villas, retail boutiques and dining. Club membership includes Oil Nut Bay Club membership as well as access to Biras Creek Resort services and facilities. Also available to members and their guests will be an on-site concierge, spa, wellness center, swimming pool and helipad. The North Sound Yacht Club will also proudly offer crew amenities such as on-site customs clearing, transportation to local destinations, Wi-Fi and the legendary Fat Virgin Cafe.

David V. Johnson's Oil Nut Bay and North Sound Yacht Club recently approved by the Government of the British Virgin Islands and now under construction, places new focus on the British Virgin Islands, further enhancing them as a global acclaimed destination, said David Pearey, Governor, British Virgin Islands. “

David's passion and vision to be a part of our community make him a most valued partner. His commitment to providing a world-class resort, residential community, and mega-yacht facility, to the development and enhancement of the local population and to eco-sensitive practices, are setting a new standard for excellence in the BVI.”

$10,000 Donation to Robinson O'Neal Memorial Primary School

The Victor Foundation, established by David and Pam Johnson, donated $10,000 to the Robinson O'Neal Memorial Primary School. The donation will be used toward a new much-needed library and playground. Built in 1971, the Robinson O'Neal Memorial Primary School teaches Kindergarten through Sixth Grade, serving 109 children. Over 30 of Biras Creek’s 100 employees are former graduates of the school including Anghel George, CFO, and Cleo Bradley, Room Divisions Manager. Seventeen of the students are children or grandchildren of current Biras Creek employees.

"We are thrilled to be a part of this community and are grateful for the opportunity to be able to give back," said David V. Johnson, Chairman of Victor International and co-founder of the Victor Foundation. "We have found nothing but a warm welcome from the people of Virgin Gorda and the employees of Biras Creek Resort. Donating to the school that teaches their children is a natural way to support those who help support our endeavors as well."

Developer Victor International

With a 30-year history of integrity and a strong focus on creating one development at a time, Michigan-based Victor International Corporation is a leading U.S. real estate developer. Victor has created or acquired more than 40 developments throughout its history, including the Urban Land Institute’s Award of Excellence winner, Bay Harbor, Michigan, a $1 billion, 1,200 acre luxury resort community extending along five miles of Lake Michigan; Turtle Lake, a premier, $400 million low density private community in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan; and operates Biras Creek Resort, one of the top luxury destinations in the Caribbean and world. Nanny Cay to be host Marina for Caribbean 1500, Atlantic Cup
February 2nd, 2009 7:41 AM

Nanny Cay to be host Marina for Caribbean 1500, Atlantic Cup

BVI News

The Cruising Rally Association announced today that Nanny Cay Resort & Marina, the British Virgin Islands' flagship marina, will be the Caribbean Host Marina for its sailing events.

The first Cruising Rally Association event to be hosted by Nanny Cay will be the Atlantic Cup Rally departing from the Nanny Cay Marina on Tortola, May 03, and finishing in Bermuda four to five days later.

The Atlantic Cup is the companion rally to November's Caribbean 1500 and offers the opportunity for returning cruisers to enjoy the camaraderie, competition, and adventure of an 850-mile rally. Pre-start festivities and skipper briefings will begin on May 01 at Nanny Cay.

The Atlantic Cup is open to sailors with well founded offshore boats at least 38 feet long and crews of two or more. It is not limited to veterans of other Cruising Rally Association events.

The second event is the Caribbean 1500 slated for November 02, 2009. The 2009 Caribbean 1500 Rally will be the 20th annual running of this event making it the largest and longest-running offshore cruising event in the Americas.

Steve Black, President and Founder of the Cruising Rally Association, anticipates a record entry of returning Ralliers for the anniversary activities.

"Nanny Cay, with its marina, hotel and boat yard offers a broad range of facilities, services, and amenities which will be a popular choice with our Atlantic Cup and Caribbean 1500 participants," said Black.

"This will be the 20th year of the Caribbean 1500 and we believe that Nanny Cay will be a particularly fine place to celebrate," he added.

"We are very pleased to be part of the Cruising Rally Association events. The fact that we are attracting high quality events, shows that we are creating a world-class marina here in the British Virgin Islands. We're extremely well suited to attend to the needs of the skippers, crew, and guests associated with these events," said Miles Sutherland-Pilch, General Manager of Nanny Cay.

Nanny Cay Resort & Marina is located between Road Town and West End on Tortola in the British Virgin Islands. Its fully equipped marina and boat repair facility has berths for 180 motor cruisers and yachts and two boat lifts of 50 and 70 tons capacity.

Nanny Cay also includes a 40-room hotel and new waterfront townhouses for purchase and rental, two restaurants, a chandlery, a small supermarket, shops and boutiques, a dive shop, a water sports center, free WiFi service, and a gym and spa.

The Cruising Rally Association rallies retain some of the competitive elements of traditional sailboat races, but offer social, educational and technological enhancements that broaden the appeal of the event to couples and families, as well as racers - both experienced and first-timers.

The Cruising Rally Association is widely supported by leading companies in the marine, tourism, and financial industries. In addition to the Nanny Cay Resort & Marina, sponsors include Davenport & Company LLC, West Marine, Blue Water Sailing, World Cruising Ltd., Switlik, ICOM, Quantum Sail Design, Gill, OCENS, Bluewater Yachting Center, Hampton's Towne Bank and Towne Mortgage, Hampton Roads Convention and Visitors Bureau, Mount Gay Rum, and Reed's Almanac.

Premier wants Moorings environmental awareness to be emulated

Government Information Service

Premier and Minister for Tourism Honourable Ralph T. O'Neal, OBE wants to see the environmental consciousness displayed by The Moorings in its expansion initiative emulated.

Speaking at the opening of The Moorings Village and 40th Anniversary Celebration on Thursday, Honourable O'Neal said it is gratifying to see the careful consideration paid to the environment in the pursuit of development.

"A desalination plant and a laundry operation that uses a special treatment system to recycle water are among the innovations included in the expansion project," the Premier noted.

He added that "with so much emphasis on the need to preserve and protect the environment, the initiative taken by The Moorings is certainly one that should be broadly emulated."

The Premier also commended the management of The Moorings for being a good corporate citizen, another example he would like to see broadly emulated. He applauded the company's collaboration with the Conservation and Fisheries Department and the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports in efforts to benefit the wider community.

"Its continued and far-reaching involvement in the local community clearly demonstrates its willingness to contribute to the overall growth and development of the Territory as a whole," he said.

According to the Premier "it is this kind of leadership, innovation and partnership that is needed if these Virgin Islands are to continuously grow from strength to strength."

Chief Executive, TUI Marine and The Moorings Mr. Lex Raas thanked Government for working in partnership with the company, noting that without the partnership the expansion would not have been possible.

In his remarks, Executive Director of TUI Travel PLC, the parent company of The Moorings, Mr. Peter Long expressed confidence that with the $15 million expansion project, The Moorings will prove to be a great asset to the Virgin Islands (UK).

Mr. Long said the company spared no effort in ensuring that the expansion project was ecologically friendly. "As a company we are very committed to sustainable development," he said adding that "our focus on sustainable tourism was paramount when it came to the re-development of Tortola."

Mr. Long further stated that the company is committed to preserving "the cruising ground and coastal beauty for future generations."

The Virgin Islands (UK) is regarded as a premier sailing destination and the opening of The Moorings Village is regarded as a welcome attention to the Territory's tourism product. Tourism is one of the main economic pillars of the BVI and Government is committed to maintaining the Territory's leadership position as a diverse, upscale niche market destination.
